The US Supreme Court Grasp The Future Of The Internet
The US Supreme Court hears a case that Holds the Future of the Internet. If the court takes serious action on this side then the feed of social media will be changed completely. On Monday, the Supreme Court hears the case over state laws in Florida and Texas. The major question was whether states like Florida and Texas can force social media platforms to carry content they find objectionable or hateful.
“These cases could shape free speech online for a generation,” says Alex Abdo, litigation director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.
In early 2021, some social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and others booted former president Donald Trump from their platforms. These platforms were in major fear that his posts could provoke unrest in states. After this two republican states, Florida and Texas passed laws against this.

Many conservatives were out there who were claiming that their viewpoints were unfairly censored on major platforms. However, after the involvement of two tech-industry trade associations, these laws were quickly put on hold by the state governments.
But now if the Supreme Court stands with these laws then the governments of Florida and Texas will gain the power to control the post on social Media. Today social sites have the full right to set their own rules and terms of service.
On Monday the arguments lasted for around four hours, during which the justice raised the questions of how social media companies should be categorized and treated under the law. Apart from this, the states have also raised the negative impact of social media posts on mass communication. States have also said that now social media companies have become the public place for communication, so they should be neutral to the messages.

Abdo, of the Knight Institute, says. “We’re hopeful that the court will strike down the must-carry provisions but chart a path forward for reasonable social media transparency laws.”
