Generative AI for healthcare but not everyone’s thrilled
In recent times, generative AI has emerged in multiple domains including entertainment, media, education, and many more. This new technology claims to solve multiple complex issues in a better and easier way. With all its capabilities AI companies are now pushing their limits to the medical domain and asking to use the potential of AI for healthcare.
Unlike other industries, AI for healthcare is evolving the latest techniques and algorithms. There are a number of healthcare apps available in the market that help patients get rid of the long queues at hospitals, make appointments with doctors, and many others.
The evolvement of Tech firms to push AI for healthcare:
Tech giants to AI startups are pushing the use of GenAI into the healthcare domain. Google Cloud and its related products are now collaborating with Highmark Health, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit healthcare company. This collaboration aims to provide more personalized solutions to patients. Apart from this Amazon has also announced that it is also working with some unnamed customers to “social determinants of health.”
Additionally, startups like Ambience Healthcare are working on building AI apps to provide personal Assistance to the practitioners. However, despite all these practices and innovations, a recent survey shows that only 53% of U.S. consumers thought that GenAI could improve the healthcare industry. “One of the key issues with generative AI is its inability to handle complex medical queries or emergencies,” Andrew Borkowski, chief AI officer at the VA Sunshine Healthcare Network. “Its finite knowledge base — that is, the absence of up-to-date clinical information — and lack of human expertise make it unsuitable for providing comprehensive medical advice or treatment recommendations,” he added.

However, GenAI has shown significant applications in the healthcare industry including Medical imaging, Drug discovery, Personalized medicine, and many more. But still, if we look into the details AI for healthcare is not reliable for the patients. It can cause inappropriate treatments or even life-threatening situations for the patients.
GenAI for healthcare
In a 2023 study out of Stanford Medicine, a team of researchers found that many Chatbots including the ChatGPt failed when they asked about kidney functions and other complex healthcare issues.
However, GenAI tools in the healthcare industry can be used for different work including preparing discharge documents, scheduling appointments, and other tasks. But these all should be observed by the physicians itself and there is no scope for mistakes in this sector. Healthcare is a very critical domain, and it is not something where we can experiment with the health of patients.
