When you are on your way to your preferred destination, Google Maps is a frequently used application. Additionally, it alerts you to crowded streets so you can decide to avoid them. But what to do when Google itself does not show an alternate route? How to force Google Maps to take a certain route.

Sometimes, you know better than what Google Maps shows on your screen. In this scenario, you can tell Google to take a specific route. Most of the time, Google Maps itself suggests a certain route by measuring the traffic and road conditions. However, when it doesn’t show you, this article could be time-saving for you.

How to Make an Alternate Route in Google Maps

With technological advancement, Google Maps has added unique features to its system. Now you can easily take an alternative route in Google Maps by following the below steps:

  • First of all, enter a destination on Google Maps.
  • At the map screen, enter your destination, and hit the enter button.
  • You will get the location on your phone, click on the direction button to follow the specific path.
  • Select your starting point and Google Maps will show you the distance needed to be covered with the best possible route with blue color.
  • Now, click on the grey or light blue line adjacent to the suggested route by Google.
  • When you click on the alternate route, it automatically shifts its route.
  • It recommends if you should take that route based on traffic or road conditions.
  • For example, purpose, I have taken a destination to New York from New Rochelle, and I have available two routes here.

  • Similarly, you can decide your own custom route based on availability.
  • Moreover, you can check if an alternate route takes more time or less on the left side of the screen.

Why are Google Maps alternate routes not showing?

Google Maps does not always show the alternate route for all destinations. The reason behind this is quite obvious; no alternate route may be available, so Google not showing it. But if you think there is a glitch and there must be an alternate route, click on the adjacent locations of Google Maps.

If Google Maps has an alternate route available, it shows the light blue in the destination. Furthermore, you can click on the various routes to confirm if you can force Google Maps to take a certain route as per your requirements.

Another reason why Google Maps does not show an alternate route is due to its algorithm-based optimization. Google considers various aspects before it shows you a route like road clouser or blocked, high traffic, maintenance work, etc.

The final reason might be your device itself; you might be running out of data, and your device is not able to collect resources from the Map. There is also a possibility that Google Maps not get updated in a certain area.

How to Find Alternate Routes on Google Maps on iPhone?

In the iPhone, forcing Google Maps for an alternate route is almost identical to what it is on the Desktop. There is only one difference here you should have Google Maps installed on your iPhone and the rest procedure will be the same, as discussed below.

  • In the first step, enter a destination on the Google Maps app on your iPhone.
  • At the map screen, enter your destination, and hit the enter button.
  • You will get the location on your phone, click on the direction button to follow the specific path.
  • Select your starting point and Google Maps will show you the distance needed to be covered with the best possible route with a blue color.
  • Now, click on the grey or light blue line adjacent to the suggested route by Google.
  • When you click on the alternate route, it automatically shifts its route.
  • It recommends if you should take that route based on traffic or road conditions.

How to Add Multiple Destinations to a Route on Google Maps

Adding multiple destinations on your route is quite easy with Google Maps and you can take multiple stops before reaching the final destination. Google Maps will automatically tell you to stop at the desired destination.

For example, if you want to travel to New York from New Rochelle, just enter the destination on the map. Now, suppose you want to enjoy Starbucks before you reach the final destination, click on the add destination as shown below snapshot.

When you click on the Add destination, it starts suggesting the best places on the route or you can search via the search box. In my case, it suggests me Starbucks coffee center, just click on it, and it will be added to the route.

Alternatively, you can add a route by just clicking on the Map. On the map, click on any famous place, and it will start showing you the “Add stop” button as shown in the below snapshot. Once you click on the add stop, it starts showing on the route.
