The AI craze has impacted the US government, Every US federal agency must hire a chief AI officer
US Vice President Kamala Harris announced a new policy regarding hiring Artificial Intelligence experts by Federal Agencies. The US government has now asked them to staff AI chief officers in their team.
In the coming summer season, the Biden government is planning to hire approximately 100 professional AI experts. As per the government announcement they are doing so to “promote the trustworthy and safe use of AI.”
Kamala Harris announced that-” By December 1, 2024, Federal agencies will be required to implement concrete safeguards when using AI in a way that could impact Americans’ rights or safety. These safeguards include a range of mandatory actions to reliably assess, test, and monitor AI’s impacts on the public, mitigate the risks of algorithmic discrimination, and provide the public with transparency into how the government uses AI.”.

Before this announcement, many agencies in the US have already started appointing AI officers to their teams. The US Department of Justice announced Jonathan Mayer as their first CAIO in February. Mayer will be leading the team of cybersecurity experts in order to figure out the enforcement of AI law.
In recent times, AI has been used in generating content, music, and video, or instead, we can say that these chatbots are more than just chatbots now. But sometimes these are often used in creating seepflakes news or images. The US government has now taken a step to enforce the beneficial use of AI among citizens.
In their announcement, the government has highlighted some facts that agencies can ensure by hiring AI experts.
“When at the airport, travelers will continue to have the ability to opt out from the use of TSA facial recognition without any delay or losing their place in line.
When AI is used in the Federal healthcare system to support critical diagnostics decisions, a human being oversees the process to verify the tools’ results and avoid disparities in healthcare access.

When AI is used to detect fraud in government services there is human oversight of impactful decisions and affected individuals have the opportunity to seek remedy for AI harms.”.
Additionally, the government said that if any agency fails to follow these guidelines then they must cease using the AI system further. So somehow, it became mandatory for the federal agency to appoint AI officers. By the Fiscal year 2025, the Biden government is planning to include an extra $5 million in their budget for training the AI programs.
By issuing these guidelines, the major aim of the government is to demonstrate the safe and trustworthy use of AI.
