Apple Recently Terminated The Epic’s Developer Account, Calling The Company ‘Verifiably Untrustworthy’

Mar 8, 2024

Apple has recently terminated the developer accounts of Epic saying the company is “verifiably untrustworthy”. The Epic team was planning to launch their Epic Games Store on iOS but Apple has terminated the account.

Back in February, Epic Games Newsroom announced on X(Formerly Twitter) that “We are bringing more opportunities to developers across all platforms and we’re so excited about what’s to come.… including bringing the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe.” As per the recent blog of Epic previously they got approval from Apple to launch their Epic Games Store on IOS. But now after a few days of approval, Apple has taken this step of approval back and terminated the accounts of the Epic developers.

Epic has recently shared a blog post and claims that-” In terminating Epic’s developer account, Apple is taking out one of the largest potential competitors to the Apple App Store. They are undermining our ability to be a viable competitor and they are showing other developers what happens when you try to compete with Apple or are critical of their unfair practices.”

The lawyer representing Apple has sent a letter to Epic saying that Epic is” verifiably untrustworthy. “ Additionally, Apple said that it does not find the company reliable and that it will follow the developer guidelines and rules of the Apple IOS store.

In their press release, Epic said that Apple’s terminating the Swedish developer account is “a serious violation of the DMA and shows Apple has no intention of allowing true competition on iOS devices.”

Fortnite on the App Store:

Epic team was planning to introduce a new app store in Europe for distributing different games including Fortnite. But the account is now being deleted by Apple. Epic also has a previous working history with the Apple store launching different games. In 2010 also Epic released their Epic Citadel on the IOS store. Also, Apple has highlighted Epic games at the World Wide Developer Conferences and other events.

In their blog post, Epic says “Apple said one of the reasons they terminated our developer account only a few weeks after approving it was because we publicly criticized their proposed DMA compliance plan.”

If you are wondering about DMA compliance, it basically requires Apple to allow third-party app stores. Article 6(4) of the DMA says: “The gatekeeper shall allow and technically enable the installation and effective use of third-party software applications or software application stores using, or interoperating with, its operating system and allow those software applications or software application stores to be accessed by means other than the relevant core platform services of that gatekeeper.”

Additionally, after the termination of the Epic developer accounts from the app store, Epic is saying that Apple has done this to remove the competition from the app store. But “We will continue to fight to bring true competition and choice to iOS devices in Europe and around the world.” If you are expecting a version of Fortnite to be available on the iOS store soon, it is not going to happen anytime soon.
