Google Cloud introduced its self-designed Arm chips in its data centers

Apr 11, 2024

Google is not taking its steps into the world of custom processors, following the footsteps of revealed companies Microsoft, Amazon, and others. Google has introduced its first-ever custom Arm-based CPUs,” Google Axion Processors”. The tech giant will now use its self-designed Arm chips for its in-house data centers.

Introducing its new Axion processors, Google Cloud has posted on X saying,” “Google has a long history of designing silicon chips and deploying them at scale. So, what’s next? Introducing Google Cloud Axion—our new custom ARM-based CPU designed for the data center”

The all-new self-designed Google Axion Processors, are based on the ARM’s Nanovers V2 technology. ARM is a British company founded in 1990 by Robin Saxby and other partners. The company offers a wide range of processors and tech giants like Apple are using their processors, which shows their trust in the company’s services.

“We’re making it easy for customers to bring their existing workloads to Arm,” said Mark Lohmeyer, Google Cloud’s vice president and general manager of compute and machine learning infrastructure. “Axion is built on open foundations but customers using Arm anywhere can easily adopt Axion without re-architecting or re-writing their apps.”

Introducing the new in-house processors for data centers, Google is claiming that its new Axion instances are offering 30% better performance as compared to other arm-based instances of the competitors including AWS and Microsoft. But to prove its facts, the tech giant has not provided any kind of documentation or benchmarks on which it is comparing with its competitors. However, when resources asked Google about this, Google spokesperson Amanda Lam replied, “Technical documentation, including benchmarking and architecture details, will be available later this year,”

As Google has introduced its new processor, it describes that it is an open foundation and Google Cloud customers can easily bring their ARM workload to it without doing any modifications in it.

“Google’s announcement of the new Axion CPU marks a significant milestone in delivering custom silicon that is optimized for Google’s infrastructure and built on our high-performance Arm Neoverse V2 platform. Decades of ecosystem investment, combined with Google’s ongoing innovation and open-source software contributions ensure the best experience for the workloads that matter most to customers running on Arm everywhere.” – Rene Haas, CEO, of Arm.
