Microsoft proposed the DOD(Department of Defence) to use their image generation tool DALL-E for the execution of Military operations. The internal presentation was tilted as “Generative AI with DOD Data”, which itself represents the idea of Microsoft to integrate their AI tool for defense software generation.
“Using the DALL-E models to create images to train battle management systems,” Microsoft’s pitch to the DOD, as per the sources. Well this news came just after when OpenAI quietly removed the lines from its policies, under which OpenAI “prohibited using its tools for “military and warfare” and “weapons development,”. This was first reported by the intercept. Just after removing the policy, the news of Microsoft’s presentation to the DOD came into existence.
However, later a message from the OpenAI Spokesperson went viral and he denied presenting such things to the defense. “OpenAI’s policies prohibit the use of our tools to develop or use weapons, injure others, or destroy property,” said an OpenAI spokesperson in an email. “We were not involved in this presentation and have not had conversations with U.S. defense agencies regarding the hypothetical use cases it describes.”

Bourgeous added, “We have no evidence that OpenAI models have been used in this capacity. OpenAI has no partnerships with defense agencies to make use of our API or ChatGPT for such purposes.”
The presentation was not available publicly to clarify the statement of the OpenAI not being involved in the presentation. Also, Microsoft has not officially shared any such news and they never spoke anywhere about such kind of upcoming projects with the defense agency. Generative AI tools are strictly prohibited their use when it comes to “human loss”. They are encouraging their assuage in the sector of human welfare.
Also, the government has also taken many steps to prohibit the use of AI when it comes to the confidentiality of the data. However, if any such news is confirmed by these agencies, then it is going to be an adventurous experience to see the integration of OpenAI in the defense sector.
