Generative AI is taking the elections of 2024 in a new direction. From the US to India, the AI is changing the graph of elections. AI technologies like deep fakes have started spreading misinformation regarding political angles.
“When generative AI meets the wide reach of social media networks, misinformation spreads like wildfire.” RPA2AI analyst Kashyap Kompella said.
As per the experts, evolving technology is going to affect the results of elections. Along with that, there are many recent cases related to AI, especially Deepfakes. Based on those incidents, experts are predicting a major spread of misinformation around the world.

Legal Challenges during Elections with AI:
Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), has recently published in their study that “the volume of AI-generated disinformation-specifically deepfakes images pertaining to elections has been rising by an average of 130% per month on X (formerly Twitter) over the past year.”
“There’s a very real risk that the U.S. presidential election and other large democratic exercises this year could be undermined by zero-cost, AI-generated misinformation,”- said Hood, head of research at the CCDH.
Content-generated and voice-generation features of generative AI are spreading different rumors in society. As per the sources, the voters of New Hemisphere have received a voice that sounds like President Joe Biden. The call was regarding the coming 2024 elections. As per the voters, during the call, they were instructed to stay at home and not to vote.
AI Rumours are not new during the Elections:
It is not the first time we are getting the news of misinformation spreading with AI. If we look back at the 2016 general elections in the US, there were many digital campaigns run by the political parties at the time of the elections. Even as a result, Twitter has removed the account of Donald Trump, so that the misinformation will not spread. However, the account was recovered later.

Although, in those elections, AI was not involved that much the misinformation was spread through social media. But now the technology is more advanced and there are new AI tools available in the market.
AI is now capable of generating human-like voice and video, which are not easy to distinguish as real or fake. On platforms like telegram, where “There are 25 million people that are part of these harmful communities, just feeding on other types of platforms,” Johnson said.
However, knowing all these facts about spreading misinformation with technologies like deep fakes is spreading it like wildfire. It is too early to guess the upcoming impact of this in the 2024 elections. The experts are saying most of the deepfakes on X are created by AI tools including Stability AI’s DreamStudio, OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, and others.
