Google recently announced restricting Gemini from answering questions related to the upcoming elections. The company has taken this step to safeguard the spread of misinformation among the citizens.
Tech giant Google has started restricting Gemini to answer questions when they are related to the upcoming elections. The update is already live in the US and has also started rolling out in India.
“Out of an abundance of caution on such an important topic, we have begun to roll out restrictions on the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses,” Google’s India team stated on the company’s site.
When we have tried to ask Gemini some questions related to the coming elections like” Who is Narendra Modi”, or “Who is Donald Trump”- Gemini Replies-” “I’m still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google search,”
Concern of AI-generated disinformation:
Around the globe, there is a widespread concern related to AI-generated disinformation. The advanced AI technologies are now capable of generating human-like audio and video. This is becoming a major concern for the upcoming 2024 elections. Many videos have gone viral on the internet that are spreading misinformation regarding the upcoming elections.

In Google’s recent announcement, the company has announced to restrict Gemini from answering election-related queries. “With millions of eligible voters in India heading to the polls for the General Election in the coming months, Google is committed to supporting the election process by surfacing high-quality information to voters, safeguarding our platforms from abuse, and helping people navigate AI-generated content,”- Said Google.
Additionally, this is one of the steps Google has taken to avoid the spread of misinformation using generative AI. “As we shared last December, in preparation for the many elections happening around the world in 2024 and out of an abundance of caution, we’re restricting the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses,” a company spokesperson said.
Gemini restrictions look to be continued:
This is not the first time Google has restricted the features of Gemini. After the release of Gemini’s new feature Text-to-image, Gemini was in controversies for providing wrong information. It has provided wrong historical images and also biased answers when asked about Narendra Modi.
Reacting to these responses, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, IT Deputy Minister said ” These actions directly infringe upon Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and contravene several provisions of the Criminal code.”

After all these controversies, Google has accepted the fault of Gemini and it has restricted its image generation features till the next update.
Now the latest update came after days when India issued an advisory for the tech firms to take permission from the government before releasing any new AI product in the Indian market.
The spread of misinformation in countries like India and the US is not very new in the elections. Generative AI is now taking the rumors to the next step. Now this step from Goggle can be a relief in the cloning election, later on, we will get to know this.
For now, it is not clear by the company if they will continue this feature after the 2024 elections. But Google Gemini will not answer your questions related to elections, you can ask these questions sitting in a country where upcoming elections are not there.
