Covariant, a startup company has announced to launch of RFM-1, to give robots human-like thinking. Robotics Foundation Model 1 is nothing but a Large Language Model that is designed for the robot language.
In recent years we have interacted with many advanced AI models that allow users to do their complex tasks with them. At present, about 3,000,000 industrial robots are accessing the globe but the RFM-1 model is going to change the coming future of robotics.
What is RFM-1?
RFM-1(Robotics Foundation Model 1) is going to be a new era for the foundation of robotics. This model will allow the humans to chat with the robots as they do with ChatGPT.
“RFM-1 — a Robotics Foundation Model trained on both general internet data as well as data that is rich in physical real-world interactions — represents a remarkable leap forward toward building generalized AI models that can accurately simulate and operate in the demanding conditions of the physical world.”- Covariant said in their blog post.

As per the company, the main aim of building RFM-1 was to deal with complex dynamic and physical attributes in real-world scenarios. Based on the action-conditional video, RFM 1 is stimulating “how the world will change every fraction of a second.
The RFM-1 model can combine the text inputs and images to produce the desired outcome for the humans and engineers. Apart from this RFM-1 comes with a Language-guided robot programming model. It allows the humans to instruct the robot in plain English to perform any task. For example: you can ask, are there any fruits in the basket?
Also, the company claims that the robot is also capable of asking for help from humans if it will be facing any issues in picking up the items.
Interacting with a Robot in plain English will make it more comfortable for the humans. They will feel like they are interacting with any AI model like ChatGPT.
Covariant is a software company that was founded in 2017 by Peter Chen. The company delivers Robotics Foundation models for the real world. They believe that a” truly robust understanding of the physical world comes from encountering many rare events and making sense of them. Through operating in the ever-changing warehouse environments 24/7, our systems uncover these long-tail events that are hard to encounter in lab-like environments.”
RFM-1 comes with some Limitations:
RFM-1 is not yet available for the customers or public use. The company said in its blog post -” We already have firsthand experience of how RFM-1 can bring value to existing customers and expect to roll out RFM-1 to them in the coming months. By deploying RFM-1 to production, we also expect the collected data to help target RFM-1’s current failure modes and accelerate RFM-1’s learning.”

Their team is continuously working to scale up the world model. For now, this model is not capable of modeling small objects and rapid moments.
With this announcement, Covariant has definitely opened up the doors for new Innovations. The customers can expect the release of the RFM-1 model in the coming months.
