Nvidia announces GR00T “moonshot” to create human-level AI in robot form

Mar 22, 2024

Nvidia has recently announced its general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots, Project GR00T. Researchers can now feed different samples to train the robots based on the observation of different human-like movements.

Nvidia researcher Linxi “Jim” Fan called the project “our moonshot to solve embodied AGI in the physical world.”

Introduction about project GR00T:

Nvidia launched project GR00T on 18 March, at Nvidia’s annual GTC conference. The company said this is a foundation model for human-like intelligence in robots and breakthroughs in robotics and embodied AI.

“Building foundation models for general humanoid robots is one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “The enabling technologies are coming together for leading roboticists around the world to take giant leaps towards artificial general robotics.”

GR00T, which stands for Generalist Robot 00 Technology, is designed so that Robots can understand natural language and can further emulate their movements by observing the different actions and movements of humans.

What Project GR00T can do?

“The GR00T model will enable a robot to understand multimodal instructions, such as language, video, and demonstration, and perform a variety of useful tasks,” wrote Fan on X. “We are collaborating with many leading humanoid companies around the world, so that GR00T may transfer across embodiments and help the ecosystem thrive.”

So far we have noticed many robots with different structures rather than human-like structures. Even in his keynote at the GTC Conference, Jensen showed some exciting movements of these Robots which he observed from human behavior. During his Keynote, we can observe the robots performing different tasks like humans, interestingly most of them look like human body structures.

But when he was asked why they were focusing on human-like structures rather than others. “In a way, human robotics is likely easier,” said Huang in his GTC keynote. “And the reason for that is because we have a lot more imitation training data that we can provide robots because we are constructed in a very similar way.”

Along with GR00T, the company has also announced its other projects including a new computer platform called Jetson Thor, unveiled updates to its Isaac Sim robotics platform, and a few more detailed updates on these projects.

Nvidia is seeking partnerships with leading humanoid robot companies. “We are at an inflection point in history, with human-centric robots like Digit poised to change labor forever. Modern AI will accelerate development, paving the way for robots like Digit to help people in all aspects of daily life,” said Jonathan Hurst, cofounder and chief robot officer at Agility Robotics.

“We’re excited to partner with NVIDIA to invest in the computing, simulation tools, machine learning environments, and other necessary infrastructure to enable the dream of robots being a part of daily life.”- He added.
