YouTube Creators need to Label their videos with AI-generated content

YouTube has announced a self-labeling feature for the creators, under which they have to disclose if their videos contain AI-generated or synthetic material. This tool will be available at the Creator Studio where the creators can disclose their content during the posting process.

In their announcement, they said -” we’re introducing a new tool in Creator Studio requiring creators to disclose to viewers when realistic content – content a viewer could easily mistake for a real person, place, or event – is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI.”

According to YouTube, they have disclosed this new tool to increase the transparency between the user and the creators. This will build the next level of trust in the minds of the users.

However, the creators are not required to disclose the AI-generated content that they have used in generating their scripts, Color adjustment, or lighting filters, or where it’s clear the content is not real. However they need to define the originality of the content in their other videos.

A few examples of the content for which the creators need to provide disclosure include Using the likeness of a realistic person, Altering footage of real events or places, and generating realistic scenes. As a creator, if you are using any such scenarios in your videos, then you must have to provide the disclosure.

YouTube has given time to the users so that they can adjust to this new feature. In the future, the company will force the users to disclose if they do not make a habit to disclose the synthetically generated Content. Also on sensitive topics related to health and fitness, YouTube will label the videos if will finds the content misleading to the users.

To start with, YouTube has started rolling out the labels on the phone app, which will be continuing in the desktop and TV apps. The creators will find a new label in the description “How this content was made”, where it will mention “Altered or synthetic content – Sound or visuals were significantly edited or digitally generated.” the creators will need to select one for their video. This will be applicable to both long videos and shorts.

In November 2023, YouTube also announced its new privacy policy for users. In that policy, they have stated that “over the coming months, we’ll introduce updates that inform viewers when the content they’re seeing is synthetic. Specifically, we’ll require creators to disclose when they’ve created altered or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools.”

With its recent announcement, YouTube said that- these disclosures will appear as labels in the expanded description or on the front of the video player. They have also shared some pictures of the videos with labels in their post.
