The Copilot key is a must for Microsoft’s new era of AI PCs, says Intel

Mar 27, 2024

Microsoft has recently declared that PCs for Windows if released without a Copilot Key, will not be considered as” AI PCs “ by Microsoft. All the manufacturers who are making an AI PC for Microsoft have to feature the Capilot Key on the keyboard, then only the PCs will be considered as AI PCs. In short, we can say, that a Capilot Key is a must-have for a AI PC.

Todd Lewellen from Intel said about the situation-“Our joint aligned definition, Intel and Microsoft, we’ve aligned on Core Ultra, Copilot, and Copilot key,” explains Todd Lewellen, head of the PC ecosystem at Intel, in a press briefing with The Verge. “From an Intel perspective, our AI PC has Core Ultra and it has an integrated NPU because it is unlocking all kinds of new capabilities and functions in the AI space. We have great alignment with Microsoft, but there are going to be some systems out there that may not have the physical key on it but it does have our integrated NPU.”

Microsoft and Intel both are assuming that over time OEMs will adhere to Microsoft requirements and will add a Copilot key into the new PCs.  Asus machines are expected to be sipped before the requirements of Microsoft and even Dell has literally come up with a Capilot sticker on the keyboard so that later they can switch it with the Capilot key.

AI PCs are the latest and most advanced technology in the digital world. In the last year, Microsoft has partnered with Intel and ARM so that they can deliver the first-ever “true AI integration” to the coming computers and they are getting success into this with their partnership.

Back in January 2024, Microsoft introduced the Capilot key for the new generation of Windows 11. This is the most significant change in the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades, which was introduced to empower the engagement of people with AI. The Copilot key is placed on the bottom side of the keyboard near the space bar key. By pressing the Copilot key, users can interact with the AI transformation and can ask any questions about it.

With the announcement of Capilot, at that time it was limited to a few regions but now Microsoft has made it a must for AI PCs. This decision will bring a new change in the AI world of PCs.
